No to WTO

It was thumbs down for the WTO at a meeting of Indian NGOs held in New Delhi in September organised by KEPA's partner organisation, Lokayan.

The meeting was on the theme 'global solidarity and democratising the WTO'. But it was clear that the feeling among the many organisations represented that the latter task is a dead end and that it is impossible to get the views of poor countries heard in the WTO.

According to KEPA's director of development cooperation Sirpa Mallea, who took part in the meeting, while the speakers voiced their mistrust of rich countries' machinations in the WTO, they also made clear that in many developing countries lack of democracy means that government dealings with the WTO do not reflect the wishes of civil society.
